The Kansas City Royals have once again made a move to strengthen the minor league system, as they have signed pitcher Igor Feliz for $225,000. Feliz, 17, comes to the Royals from the Dominican Prospect League. Mike Axisa from MLBTradeRumors wrote the following on Feliz:
The 17-year-old is said to have a "fastball [that] works between 91-93 mph but has been clocked up to 95 mph recently" and "good feel for his off-speed pitches." There's a chance he'll be able to remain a starter down the road.
In addition I have read that he has capable off speed pitches as well. It is hard to project what a 17-year-old prospect will turn into, but if the Royals spent $225,000 on Feliz, they must really see something in him.
Previously this winter, the Royals signed Darwin Castillo, a 6'5" pitcher also out of the Dominican Republic. Castillo signed for $300,000.
A few notable Dominican pitchers currently in the major leagues include: Fausto Carmona, Octavio Dotel, Ubaldo Jimenez, and Carlos Villanueva.
