After all of the hype and millions of dollars in bets placed, the 136th Preakness Stakes finally ran today at Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course and some new and familiar faces stand atop the leaderboard when all is said and done. The unexpected winner, Shackleford, worried announcers just before the race as his handlers tried to calm and settle him into post position. Yet when the gates opened, it was Shackleford all the way.
Animal Kingdom, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, finished second and made it a close race at the end, making up for lost time after being lost behind a mass of horses around the final stretch. Astronomy was a complete surprise coming in third after staying close the entire race. Dialed In, the favorite at the last minute to win the Preakness, finished fourth.
