Royals Make Room For Johnny Giavotella By Optioning Yamaico Navarro To Omaha

Johnny Giavotella is officially penciled in as the starter and will be batting sixth this evening when he makes his major league debut against Rick Porcello and the Detroit Tigers. To complete the roster move, the Royals have optioned recently acquired utility player Yamaico Navarro to Omaha.

In nine plate appearances over two games with the Royals since being acquired from the Red Sox for Mike Aviles, Navarro had three hits and three RBI in addition to a pair of walks.

It comes as a puzzling move, but it shouldn't come as much of a surprise given Dayton Moore's affinity for Chris Getz. Navarro seemingly is a true utility player and would be much more valuable to the Kansas City lineup, while Getz really is only capable of playing second base.

Navarro had played in 34 games this season with Pawtucket, the AAA affiliate of the Red Sox, where he batted .258/.362/.469 with five home runs and 13 RBI.
