With word leaking that it was "more than a workout," the New England Patriots could now be on the verge of signing celebrated veteran Brian Waters to help solidify their offensive line heading into the season. The Chiefs released Waters earlier this preseason as a "mutual" decision per Todd Haley, and the team placed Jon Asamoah in the starting line-up shortly thereafter.
Why the Pats waited until the end of the preseason is interesting since, if they signed him now, the contract would be fully guaranteed. Signing any veteran after week one voids that and that’s what several teams are likely waiting for as they address the long-term while also thinking of financials. It’s likely the team wanted to check out its own young candidates along the line and already have a good idea of what Waters can do. Waters went to the Pro Bowl last season.
