Former Kansas Jayhawk, Gary Woodland, Sits Out PGA Sony Open In Hawaii

Topeka native Gary Woodland was back on the mainland last week working on his swing with new coach Butch Harmon.

As a result, Woodland was not in the field at the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club on Oahu in Hawaii. Another former Kansas Citian, Tom Pernice Jr., was competing, though, in the PGA Tour’s second event of the 2012 season.

Harmon has worked with a number of the pros on the PGA Tour, including Greg Norman, Fred Couples, Davis Love III and, more recently, Dustin Johnson and Adam Scott.

Pernice shot a final-round 71, following a Saturday round of three-under-par 67, to end the tournament with a four-round score of 277, ten shots back of the winner, Johnson Wagner. Pernice’s 277 was good for 48th place and a paycheck of $14,709.
