Oklahoma Defensive Coordinator Reported To Be First Choice For Same Position At Clemson

Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables spent the weekend at Clemson University interviewing for the open defensive coordinator position at the Atlantic Coast Conference School.

Venables has been an assistant at Oklahoma since 1999, going to OU from Kansas State when Stoops was named the head coach of the Sooners. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2004 after Stoops’ brother, Mike, was named head coach at Arizona.

Mike Stoops has returned to Oklahoma, and it is believed he will take over as defensive coordinator or, at the very least, in a co-role, again, with Venables.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney says there are four primary candidates being interviewed for the position, but a source at Clemson said it was Venables’ job to turn down. Venables’ annual salary at OU is around $440,000. Clemson is reported to be willing to double that amount.
