The former 10th overall pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft out of Notre Dame has a new contract with Sporting KC. Defender Matt Besler has put his John Hancock on a new deal with the team that drafted him. Sporting KC did not disclose how much the contract was worth or its length.
Besler was named the 2012 MLS Defender of the Year as a part of the league's best defense, allowing just 27 goals in 34 regular season games. It's the second straight year Besler was bestowed with the honor. In his 2011 campaign, Besler played in 35 games and logged a full 90 minutes in each game.
Besler is a native of the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park, Kan. He began training with the United States men's national soccer team back in August. He's also the highest ranked player at his position in the MLS Castrol Index, checking in at No. 25.
