The Washington Nationals placed Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled listed this afternoon and have called up 19-year-old Bryce Harper, who will make his major league debut on Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Harper, the first pick in the 2010 MLB first-year draft, was batting .250/.333/.375 in 20 games this season at AAA Syracuse.
The 6'3" 215 lb center fielder was drafted as a catcher but shifted to center field, similar to Wil Myers' switch to the outfield with the Kansas City Royals' organization.
Harper gained fame in 2009 when he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in May. He then would obtain his GED after his sophomore year of high school, allowing him to play one season at the College of Southern Nevada and then enter the 2010 draft.
