2012 MVC Baseball Tournament: Upsets Galore On First Day Of Tournament

The 2012 Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament got underway in Springfield, Mo., on Tuesday, and no team was safe.

Top-seeded Indiana State managed just one hit in a 5-0 loss to No. 8 seed Creighton. Blue Jays pitcher Ty Blach faced three over the minimum, pitching all nine innings for the shutout.

Creighton advanced to face No. 4 seed Illinois State, which downed No. 5 seed Evansville 10-3 earlier in the day. Illinois State outfielder Eric Aguilera went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the Redbirds at the plate. Indiana State and Evansville will meet in the bottom part of Bracket A. In Bracket B, No. 6 seed Southern Illinois upset No. 3 seed Wichita State by a 6-3 score. Southern Illinois first baseman Chris Serritella went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the Salukis. Southern Illinois advanced to face No. 7 seed Bradley, who beat No. 2 seed Missouri State 5-3.

Bradley outfielder Mike Tauchman hit a two-RBI single in the top of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie and the Braves held on for the win. Missouri State will face Wichita State on Wednesday.

So, to recap the day: The top three seeds are all one loss away from elimination. Wednesday should be quite dramatic.
