2012 MVC Baseball Tournament: Creighton Advances To Championship With 10-3 Win Over Illinois State

The unlikely tournament run of Creighton has reached the pinnacle.

The No. 8 seed — the lowest in the tournament — has reached the MVC Baseball Tournament championship game after Thursday's 10-3 win over Illinois State.

Blue Jays starter Erik Mattingly gave up three runs (one earned) over six innings. Creighton got on the board first with a two-run opening frame. After a three-run fifth, Illinois State answered with a three-run bottom frame. The Redbirds scored one in the seventh to the cut deficit to one, but Creighton answered with a five-run eighth to put the game away and punch its ticket to the championship.

The Blue Jays were led at the plate by second baseman Peter Jake, who went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Illinois State was led by outfielder Chad Hinshaw, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

The championship will be played at 7 p.m. on Saturday, against either Illinois State, Southern Illinois or Missouri State.
