Kentucky Derby Results 2012: Mario Gutierrez Wins First Ever Race In Kentucky Derby With I'll Have Another

Even the best veterans sometime never have a chance to take the win at Churchill Downs or even one of the triple crown races like the Belmont or Preakness or today's Kentucky Derby. Yet Mario Gutierrez, a first time jockey at Churchill Downs and the Derby, took an unexpected win today with I'll have Another over Bodemeister at the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Bodemeister, one of the favorites heading into today's race, led for the majority of the race and even had a five-length lead nearing the final stretch. It was there that I'll Have Another took over and surprised everyone. Dullahan finished third.

It was the first victory for not only the jockey but for the owner in Doug O'Neill as well. It was a team that the announcers on NBC called "an unexpected group." It's a story that glory is available for anyone at the Derby and that's what makes it one of the most storied events in sports.
