The 62-year-old winner of eight major golf championships says he is hitting the ball a little shorter than normal right now as a result of the loss of strength from the injury, but “it will come back,” he says.

Watson had high compliments for the Far Chapel course, a 7,000-yard, par 70 layout, which is hosting its first pro championship. “It really is a wonderful golf course,” he told reporters on Wednesday. “If the flags are really tucked, it’s going to be a very tough course to score on.”

Fred Couples, 52, is the defending champion. Watson is in a threesome on Thursday and Friday with Greg Norman and Tom Lehman. Norman has not played in a Champions Tour event since 2009.
