2012 MLB Draft: Kansas City Royals Select HS Outfielder Alfredo Escalera-Maldonado In Round 8

Another "off the radar" guy, Alfredo Escalera-Maldonado is a native Puerto Rican who has been prepping as IMG Academy in Florida. The Stetson commit was announced as a centerfielder, but has experience at third base as well.

Listed at 6'2" 180 lbs, Escalera-Maldonado was named second team All-State in Florida by Rawlings.

It clearly looks like lately the Royals are going for signable high school kids that can potentially turn into solid contributors with time and patience.

It's a little surprising that the Royals have taken this path as it was expect that many college players would be going early this year because of the new draft rules.

Honestly I am not sure of what to make of the Kansas City draft at the moment, but stayed tuned as we will continue to bring you the first ten picks and expanded Royals coverage throughout the afternoon and evening.
