2012 MLB Draft: Kansas City Royals Sign Top Pick Kyle Zimmer

The Kansas City Royals and the fifth overall pick of the 2012 MLB Draft have agreed to terms three days after the selection. University of San Francisco pitcher Kyle Zimmer agreed to terms that, according the reports, is near or just below the slot value of $3.5 million in signing bonuses.

Zimmer, 20, rose to prominence last summer in the Cape Cod League before returning to San Francisco for his junior season, where he was hampered by a hamstring injury. Zimmer is classified as a "two-pitch" prospect by scouts, possessing a mid-90s fastball and a "power" curveball, and can also throw a change-up.

Zimmer's next move will be an evaluation at the Royals' facility in Surprise, Arizona, to assess the extent of his hamstring injury, then the Arizona Rookie League and assignment to one of the Kansas City minor league affiliaties afterwards.
