Kansas City-native Tom Pernice Jr. fired an opening-round three-under-par 67, tying him for fourth place with four others in the U.S. Senior Open being played in Lake Orion, Mich.
↵Pernice is two shots back of veteran pro Tom Kite, who set a USGA championship nine-hole record with a score of 28 on the front nine on his way to a five-under 65 for the lead after Thursday’s round.
↵Kansas City’s Tom Watsonn was at even-par 70 and tied for 29th after the opening round. For Watson, the U.S. Senior Championship serves as a tune up for another major championship next week, the Open Championship at Royal Lytham in Scotland.
↵Watson has been a runner-up at the Senior Championship three times, but has never won it.
