The Kansas City Royals continue their West Coast swing as they begin a four-game series against the Seattle Mariners Thursday night at Safeco Field.
The Royals will send Luis Mendoza (4-6, 4.31 ERA) to the hill, looking to continue his strong run of form, not giving up more than three earned runs in a start for more than a month. In his last start against the Minnesota Twins on July 21, Mendoza earned the win when he gave up seven hits and three runs in 6-1/3 innings of work in Kansas City's 7-3 victory.
Seattle will counter with Jason Vargas (10-7, 3.91 ERA), who could be making his last start for Seattle after a strong July. Vargas hasn't given up more than three earned runs in five straight starts, which included his last outing against the Tampa Bay Rays. Vargas gave up seven runs and one unearned run over six innings in the Mariners' 2-1 win over Tampa Bay on July 21.
