Royals Vs. Mariners Recap: Kansas City Drops First Game, 4-1

The Kansas City Royals lost the first of a four-game series against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday, 4-1 at Safeco Field in Seattle. The Royals could only manage two hits for the entire game, having basically no answer for Mariners pitcher Jason Vargas, who went eight innings, allowing only one run on one hit, an RBI double by Billy Butler in the fourth inning, scoring Lorenzo Cain.

Royals starting pitcher Luis Mendoza only went five innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, starting by allowing a 2-RBI single to Mariners first baseman Mike Carp, who went three-for-four with an additional run scored. Carp scored on a Brendan Ryan RBI Single. Right fielder Carlos Peguero hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to close out the scoring.

The second game of this series is scheduled for a 9:10 CT p.m. first pitch from Safeco Field.
