Kansas City Chiefs fans welcomed back starters Matt Cassell, Jamaal Charles and Eric Berry with open arms in the team's impressive preseason-opening win over the Arizona Cardinals this past weekend. But as important as those starters' health is to the Chiefs' fate in 2012, it's the backup positions that are up for grabs as the preseason continues, namely the one at backup quarterback between Brady Quinn and Ricky Stanzi.
Quinn appears to still be No. 2 on the depth chart ahead of Stanzi, as he was in the opener. But Arrowhead Pride wouldn't be surprised if Stanzi gets some snaps with the second team this week. Cassell is coming off an injury-shortened season, so the backup job in KC is more important than in most camps.
Of course, the main thing Chiefs fans are watching right now is the situation with top receiver Dwayne Bowe and his contract holdout. Despite a reported agreement over the weekend, not much has changed. The Chiefs have a couple of good options at the top two wide receiver spots now in Jon Baldwin and Steve Breaston, but Bowe would surely usurp one when he eventually signs.
Perhaps Chiefs coaches liked what they saw Saturday, because the depth chart for the next preseason game against the St. Louis Rams will look basically the same. Head coach Romeo Crennel has already said not to read too much into the depth chart this early anyway
