Royals Second Baseman Chris Getz Out For Season With Broken Thumb

Kansas City Royals second baseman Chris Getz was taken out of tonight's game in the fifth inning after being struck in the thumb while attempting a bunt. The team later confirmed that Getz will undergo season-ending surgery on the thumb. Tony Abreu replaced Getz at second base, with Mike Moustakas moving into Getz's leadoff position in the lineup.

The 28-year-old Getz had appeared in 64 games for the Royals in 2012, hitting .275 with no homers and 17 RBI in 189 at-bats. Getz had split time at second base with Yuniesky Betancourt, but Kansas City had requested unconditional release waivers on Betancourt on Wednesday. No word yet on what moves the Royals will make to fill the void left by Getz's injury.
