University of Kansas basketball coach Bill Self would love to coach the USA men's basketball team for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, but he isn't expecting a call:
"Yeah. They’re not going to call, though...But I think there’s a guy named Popovich (Gregg, San Antonio Spurs coach) and a guy named Rivers (Doc, Boston Celtics coach) and some guys like that that probably have a better relationship with Dream Team-type players than what I do."
Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski led the USA team to a 13-0 record of the course of two Olympics, seeing his team outscore the opposition by an average of about 30 points per game on their way to two gold medals. Krzyzewski has publicly stated that he doesn't plan on returning to the USA men's team for the next Olympics, creating an opening for the head coaching position.
Self is 476-158 in 19 seasons as a head coach in college basketball, including a 269-53 record at Kansas. Self's Jayhawks won the 2008 NCAA Tournament, accounting for his only national championship.
