The Kansas City Royals completed their weekend sweep of the Chicago White Sox on Sunday afternoon with Jeremy Guthrie dealing on the mound. Guthrie took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before it was broken up on a questionable ruling that resulted in a Paul Konerko infield single. After the no-hit bid was broken up, Guthrie did give up two runs in the top of the eighth which evened things up. Neither Chicago run was earned, however, as both Dayan Viciedo and Ray Olmedo scored on an Eric Hosmer error at first.
The Royals would get the lead back in the bottom half of the frame. White Sox reliever Jesse Crain issued a lead-off walk to Billy Butler, prompting Ned Yost to make the call for Jarrod Dyson. The speedy pinch runner instantly made an impact, swiping second and scoring on a Salvador Perez single to right. The Royals would then add two more insurance runs, bumping the lead to 5-2 and handing things over to Greg Holland who cleaned things up in the ninth for his fifth save of the season.
With a sweep of the first-place Sox complete, the Royals now head to Tampa for a three-game set with the Rays. Will Smith will take the mound in the series opener on Monday night.
