Unranked American James Blake registered one of the day's most surprising results, quickly defeating No. 24 Marcel Granollers in straight sets.

On the women's side of the draw, No. 4 Serena Williams defeated Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in straight sets to advance to the third round, where she will face Ekaterina Makarova. Her sister, Venus Williams, is scheduled to be in action Thursday night against No. 6 Angelique Kerber.
