Kansas State Volleyball Upsets No. 10 Minnesota

New, 1 comment

The Kansas State women's volleyball team pulled off an upset this weekend, defeating the No. 10 Minnesota Golden Gophers on Friday night. The Wildcats edged out the Big Ten foe in a five-set clash, and the victory extended their winning streak to 11 games to start the 2012 season. The 11-0 start is the best opening to a season in program history, but Friday night's win was a signature moment in this young season.

The victory marked just the sixth time the Wildcats defeated a team in the top ten of the AVCA Coaches Poll. The crucial fifth set started with an early K-State run, as the Wildcats jumped ahead 6-1. Minnesota would not convert back-to-back points for the entire set. The Wildcats are no strangers to five-set matches, and coach Suzie Fritz talked about her team's experience in those scenarios:

"I think there is no better teacher than experience," Fritz said of her team's 10-1 record in five-set matches the last two seasons. "Our comfort level on this team is pretty high. I don't have any magic words. I just think they played really, really well."

Kansas State backed up their upset win with a three-set defeat of Dayton to take the Golden Hurricane Classic. Next up for the 12-0 Wildcats is a date on Wednesday in Norman against the Oklahoma Sooners.
