Chiefs vs. 49ers: Special Teams Need To Be Special

New, 3 comments

The Kansas City Chiefs special teams are a group that is making some noise inside and outside of Kansas City. Javier Arenas and Dexter McCluster have quickly shown that they're ready to be considered one of the league's top returners.

And that's great news for the Chiefs because they haven't yet demonstrated they can consistently score on the offensive side of the ball.

The Chiefs will likely need some sort of return today to set themselves up. It doesn't even have to be a 94-yard punt return like McCluster popped off in Week 1.

The Chiefs just need the field position. That's a huge key in this game as the offense struggles.

The Chiefs punter is among the league's best so they'll be able to force the 49ers to go the distance.

But it's those returners that have everyone excited. Although special teams is one-third of the game, it's normally not considered one of the keys to the game...except in Kansas City.

A solid return day from Arenas and McCluster is a necessity for the Chiefs. Creating field position -- and, heck, even touchdowns -- is a priority.
