2011 NFL Mock Draft: Phil Taylor Possible Chiefs First Rounder Given Senior Bowl Familiarity

The latest draft mock from WalterFootball.com comes from writer Greg Cox, who says the Chiefs proximity to the dominating performance of Phil Taylor gives the team a prime opportunity to fill any holes at defensive tackle. Given that many believe the position needs addressing anyway, this doesn’t sound so bad:

Two years ago I came up with a weird way to express why I thought the Chiefs should draft B.J. Raji to play nose tackle. “You can’t build a Ferrari with BMW parts,” I said. This was not meant to be a slight towards the Bavarian Motor Works vehicle. I just meant that if you want to install a 3-4, you need players who fit the system.

Scott Pioli used the third pick in the 2008 NFL Draft to take LSU’s Tyson Jackson and another early pick (third round) on Purdue’s Alex Magee who now plays for Tampa Bay. He needs a space eater in the middle of his defensive line. He was personally at the Senior Bowl and saw how well Taylor performed.

The only question left is whether or not a previous weight problem and being booted from Penn State will prevent him from being taken this early. Obviously I believe it is possible and would be a good move.
