San Francisco 49ers GM Trent Baalke spoke at the 2011 NFL Combine this week and when talking about how he broke into the league, Dick Haley, the father of Chiefs head coach Todd Haley, came up.
"I think it starts with my first job, with the Jets, and being fortunate enough to work for one of the best talent evaluators in the business in Dick Haley," Baalke said. "I learned a lot from Mr. Haley. Also on that staff was coach Parcells, who I still consult and learned a tremendous amount from. Coach Belichick was a part of that group, and that entire staff. That staff was loaded with talent."
He was with the Jets in 1998 and that team was absolutely loaded with coaching talent. It's hard to see how one team could have so much young talent. There's a good chunk of the Chiefs current coaching staff that comes from that Jets team in the late 90s.
Dick Haley was one of the best scouts we've ever seen. Take, for example, the 1974 draft. He was the Pittsburgh Steelres director of player personnel from 1971-1990 but that '74 class was pretty incredible: Jack Lambert, Mike Webster, John Stallworth and Lynn Swann. Four future Hall of Famers in one draft class.
