Anthony Becht Reportedly Signs With Kansas City Chiefs With One-Year Deal

While Anthony Becht is a former Arizona Cardinal, don't automatically expect Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley to be familiar with him. That's because the well-traveled tight end was playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when Haley was there. Becht has also played for the New York Jets, the St. Louis Rams and, reportedly, now the Kansas City Chiefs since he signed a one-year deal.

In 2009, Becht played in all 16 games for the Cardinals and started 10 at tight end, catching 7 passes for 61 yards. Before that, he was in St. Louis and caught 6 passes for 39 yards. While Becht's receiving numbers were solid early in his playing career, at 34-years-old and after missing all of last year, it's hard to tell what he has left in the tank. Then again, he was playing for the Rams before Sam Bradford and the Cardinals after Kurt Warner. It's hard to look good when the QB position plays poorly.

Is this a move that signals some injury concerns with Tony Moeaki, who started the preseason on the PUP list with a knee problem? Is this is another training camp body? The Chiefs already have Pope and Moeaki, so it's not as if there's solid playing time there. Becht won't play special teams, since Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic wrote up a piece saying the Cardinals let him go for another player who would play ST. Simply put, we're going to have to wait and see what the Chiefs see in Becht and how he fits on the roster.

Then again, the acquisition of Keary Colbert was recently perplexing until we saw the team was serious that he was a possibility to make the team as a wide receiver. Perhaps the Chiefs aren't settled at tight end after all and Becht could improve what the Chiefs already have in house. Any player that makes the roster better is a good signing.
