Chiefs-Lions: Calvin Johnson Set To Play For Detroit, Brandon Flowers Must Step Up For Kansas City

The bar has been raised for Brandon Flowers in the last week. Not only must the Chiefs start cornerback hold down the secondary with the absence of Eric Berry for the rest of the 2011 season, but Flowers must now also cover Calvin Johnson — perhaps the best wide receiver in the NFL in today’s showdown with the Detroit Lions. The wideout has been listed on injury reports as questionable leading up to the game, but now he tells Josina Anderson that he’s “good to go.”

This only increases the pressure on a Chiefs defense that must contend with the live arm of Matt Stafford and tight end Brandon Pettigrew among other receiving options. Jahvid Best will lead Detroit’s running attack, but it’s the passing game in particular with Stafford to Johnson that gave the Bucs fits last week.

Freshly signed to a new extension, Flowers must now go out and play like the well-paid impact corner that the Chiefs are paying him to be.
