NFL Draft 2012: Dre Kirkpatrick Arrested For Pot Possession, Draft Stock Likely To Fall

The Big Lead is reporting that one of the NFL Draft’s top cornerbacks coming out for the April draft is now going to find his stock going down because of one of the dumbest things a pro prospect can do: get arrested for, well, any reason. In Kirkpatrick’s instance, it’s for possession of marijuana.

Jason McIntyre writes, "Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama’s outstanding cornerback who is expected to be a 1st round NFL draft pick in April, was arrested early this morning for possession of marijuana. According to the Manatee Sheriff’s website, Kirkpatrick – who declared for the draft last week after Alabama beat LSU to claim the National title – was busted with less than 20 grams of cannabis. No other details are available yet."

If there was any doubt that Morris Claiborne of LSU would be the top corner off the board in the first round, those doubts are now quelled. As for Kirkpatrick, he could fall even farther, perhaps off of the first day. After all, Jimmy Smith fell to the bottom of the first round for character concerns despite his incredible and obvious talent. The Ravens reaped the rewards of that.

The Chiefs are likely to be in the market for a cornerback around their pick if they lose Brandon Carr to free agency. They have little depth in the way of starting quality at the position and a top tier corner like Kirkpatrick would be difficult to pass up -- character concerns or not.
