The Kansas City Chiefs have been mentioned as a darkhorse candidate to select Alabama’s Trent Richardson a few times now and it’s an interesting proposition given that fans and sportswriters usually peg the Chiefs for an offensive lineman or possibly a quarterback reach. The Chiefs, after all, led the NFL in rushing just last year and this year after losing Jamaal Charles, the team still placed in the top half of the league in rushing yards/game. That said, there is a chance Richardson could slip to the Chiefs in the first round in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Abe Munch predicts as much in his latest mock draft. He writes, “The selection of Trent Richardson would make a lot of sense for the Chiefs. Jamaal Charles will be returning from a torn ACL and is better suited with a limited amount of touches even when healthy. Trent Richardson has big play ability but is also capable of wearing down a defense; a franchise caliber running back.”
Certainly if the Chiefs can bring back a fullback like Le’Ron McClain as well to pair with Charles and Richardson along with Dexter McCluster, the options for the new offensive coordinator would be exceptional. Then again, that offensive line will still be an issue.
