CBS Sports has some bad news and some good news. The bad news far outweighs the good in the present. That's because they have the Kansas City Chiefs as the worst team in the NFL. That's not a stretch from where the team currently stands, but remember there's more than half a season to go. Still it also means the Chiefs have the No. 1 pick in the draft, and that's good news when looking at the latest 2013 NFL mock draft.
CBS Sports analysts Dane Brugler and Rob Rang both have the Chiefs taking a quarterback at the top of the draft: Geno Smith of West Virginia. The high octane offense of the Mountaineers is built around Smith's talents, and he's been the most exciting draft prospect in college football this season.
The selection is not surprising in any way given the horrible play at the quarterback position that the Chiefs have endured this year. Matt Cassel already has 17 turnovers and he even missed a game. Brady Quinn came in to replace him as the starter and suffered a head injury. Neither one is the long-term answer and Ricky Stanzi has looked rough in his spot on the depth chart as well.
Perhaps Stanzi will eventually find a starting role in the NFL, but the Chiefs cannot bank on it. They have far more talent than a last place team should have, and could be solid bounce-back candidates with a promising quarterback under center.
