The Kansas City Chiefs need a new quarterback and they need him now. This season's split between Brady Quinn and Matt Cassel has produced the predictably disastrous results expected, and the team has no choice but to address the issue in the upcoming draft. In fact, all three quarterbacks on the roster could be replaced before Ricky Stanzi ever got a chance to play a snap in the regular season.
In their latest 2013 NFL mock draft, Charlie Cambell of Walter Football has the Chiefs going with Geno Smith in the first round with the first overall selection:
The Chiefs are a disgrace. Kansas City needs to clean house in the front office. Scott Pioli has had years to address the quarterback position, but has failed to land a good starter or a capable backup. Even Jaguars GM Gene Smith landed a better backup quarterback than what Pioli signed in Brady Quinn. That has to change this offseason, and Geno Smith would be a good place to start.
Smith has enjoyed a roller coaster season at West Virginia after riding high in the Heisman conversation early in the year. However his pro potential should be unfazed by the Mountaineers' struggles on the field, particularly on defense. Expect the team to go with a player like Smith first and foremost and for another veteran to come in and help mentor. Perhaps someone like Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers would be a good candidate.
