The San Diego Chargers worked quickly on the open market to replace one of Phil Rivers’ receivers in yesterday’s early free agency action. The Chargers lost Vincent Jackson within a matter of minutes after the bell was rung to open the proceedings at 3pm CT. Jackson went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who were opening their wallets early and often for new head coach Greg Schiano. By this morning, however, the Chargers had lessened the blow.
Robert Meachem is the new receiver for the Chargers, coming over from the New Orleans Saints. It’s a solid move on A.J. Smith’s part to take care of the leak early, since the team has so much more to do in other areas, particularly on the offensive line.
Meachem had 40 catches for 620 yards and 6 touchdowns last season catching passes from Drew Brees. He should feel right at home in another pass-heavy, prolific offense under Norv Turner.
