A survey of the latest mocks floating around for the 2012 NFL Draft has the Kansas City Chiefs likely zeroing in on one player. Sometimes that can be a sure sign of what’s to come or it means a team’s smokescreen heading toward draft weekend is working. Only hindsight will tell the truth. For now, the Chiefs are looking like the future home of Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly, with Wes Bunting’s mock being the latest to predict such a future.
"With the need at offensive tackle addressed in free agency the Chiefs can now look at one of the safest players available in the front seven," writes Bunting. "Kuechly is a tackling machine with good size, natural instincts and above-average athleticism. Is the kind of talent who can make an impact inside from day one."
Such a safe pick makes an already solid defense that much better. While the team still has something to address at defensive tackle, adding Kuechly to the linebacking corps would cement the middle and provide another playmaker next to Derrick Johnson. It’s not the sexiest addition of a big-time pass rusher or a quarterback to contend for the starting role. However, if defense wins football games, the Chiefs would have one of the best.
