The Buffalo Bills took a commanding 21-0 lead over the Kansas City Chiefs into the locker room on Sunday during a Week 2 clash at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The Bills are playing without starting running back Fred Jackson, but C.J. Spiller has gashed the Chiefs defense through the first 30 minutes. Spiller has two touchdowns and 92 yards on 11 carries.
The Chiefs finally made some movement on the offensive side of the ball at the end of the half, but a Peyton Hillis fumble on the goal line abruptly ended the scoring threat. Hillis lost control of the ball as he tried to stretch out over the goal line. It appeared as if his knee may have been down before he lost it, but replay review upheld the initial ruling of a Buffalo recovery in the end zone.
Quarterback Matt Cassel had marched the offense down the field, running the two-minute drill to put the Chiefs on the verge of a touchdown. The big play of the drive came on a 29-yard strike to Kevin Boss in the middle of the field. As he went to the ground, Boss took a shoulder in the head that tacked on 15-yards. Cassel then scrambled up the middle of the field for a 21-yard gain. It looked like he might break the plane for the touchdown, but he was pulled down on the one-yard line. Kansas City had plenty of time to run a full series on the one, but the Hillis fumble ended their first-half hopes of breaking the shutout.
The Bills extended their 7-0 lead three minutes into the second quarter with Ryan Fitzpatrick tossing it to Spiller for his second touchdown of the game. On third-and-three, Fitzpatrick lined up in the shotgun and moved to his left for a quick toss to Spiller. The explosive back from Clemson burst it outside and cut inside the left pylon for the score. Safety Eric Berry came charging up through the line, but was chipped off and forced into a bad angle. Corner Javier Arenas was also occupied by a Bills offensive lineman, who opened a lane for Spiller to go in relatively untouched.
Buffalo then pushed it to a three-touchdown lead with less than four minutes to play. Fitzpatrick was working out of the shotgun again, and played pitch-and-catch with Scott Chandler in the middle of the field. The Bills tight end beat safety Abram Elam in the seam and Fitzpatrick hit him in stride as he crossed the goal line.
Trailing by three touchdowns, the Chiefs will now have to do most of their work through the air to try and get back in it. The running game was completely stifled in the first half, with Jamaal Charles carrying the ball four times for just one yard. Hillis rushed it six times for only 22 yards.
