The Kansas City Chiefs announced today that they placed center Rodney Hudson on Injured Reserve after needing Ryan Lilja to take over during Sunday's game at center. That placed the Chiefs in a precarious position with their interior linemen, so the team also announced the signing of two new linemen to bolster the squad.
Offensive guard Russ Hochstein and center Bryan Mattison are the latest additions to the team and the move likely puts Mattison right into the starting line-up unless head coach Romeo Crennel really likes Lilja in that starting spot. Either way, Hochstein or Mattison will likely enter the line-up or be ready to go in a moment's notice if a combo of Jeff Allen, a rookie in 2012, and Lilja cannot get it done.
The bottom line is that the move is a disappointment on many levels since the team did not re-sign Casey Wiegmann, last year's starter, to make room for Hudson to take over full time.
The Chiefs will now bank on a patchwork interior line going forward in a season where the running game is central to their success.
