Six captains, two from each the offense, defense and special teams units were selected by the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2012 season on Wednesday, according to a report by the Kansas City Star.
The offensive captains are quarterback Matt Cassel and guard Ryan Lilja. Cassel is entering his fourth season with the Chiefs after an injury-shortened 2011 campaign saw him play in only nine games. 2012 will be Lilja's third year in Kansas City after playing for the Indianapolis Colts for five seasons prior.
On the defensive side, linebacker Derrick Johnson and safety Eric Berry, both Pro Bowlers, were selected as captains. Johnson has spent each of his eight NFL seasons in Kansas City since being selected as the team's first round draft pick in 2005. Berry was drafted fifth overall by the Chiefs in 2010 and missed almost all of last season with a torn ACL.
Punter Dustin Colquitt, entering his eighth season with the Chiefs, and wide receiver Terrance Copper were named special teams captains.
Kansas City opens the 2012 season at home against the Atlanta Falcons. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
