The Kansas City Royals have been rebuilding for two decades but there are some folks that are excited about what's coming in the future (and some other skeptical folks who say they've heard this before). The Royals have an impressive array of talent at the minor league level and Baseball America has put them into a top 10 list.
1B Eric Hosmer is at the top, which is no surprise. He's followed by C Wil Myers and 3B Mike Moustakas. P John Lamb and P Mike Montgomery round out the top five.
Baseball America projects the Royals 2014 lineup and includes all those guys along with C Salvador Perez, 2B Johnny Giavotella, SS Christian Colon, LF Alex Gordon and C Jarrod Dyson.
The Royals have been focusing on the draft choosing to point their resources in that direction and on the minor league level it's paid off to this point.
By devoting resources to player development, the Royals finally have found a possible path of success. They rank fifth in draft bonus expenditures over the last five years at $37.8 million, and spent heavily again in 2010 to land shortstop Christian Colon ($2.75 million), outfielder Brett Eibner ($1.25 million) and righthander Jason Adam ($800,000).
Baseball America also projects P Zack Greinke as the No. 1 starter on the 2014 team. We'll see if they devote the financial resources there.
