Royals fans have been calling for this moment for a long time and finally the decision has come that the team will be calling up Johnny Giavotella to the majors.
After hitting .339/.391/.481 with nine home runs and 72 RBI at AAA Omaha and spending the better part of four seasons in the minors, the Royals second round draft choice in 2008 out of the University of New Orleans will be making his big league debut over the weekend against the division leading Detroit Tigers.
No corresponding roster move has been announced but you have to figure Chris Getz's days in a Royals uniform are numbered as Giavotella isn't coming to Kansas City to sit on the bench. Gio will be getting plenty of choices at second base to see if he indeed is the second basemen of the future for the Royals.
This marks the fourth major call-up of the season for the Royals as previously rookies Eric Hosmer, Danny Duffy, and Mike Moustakas were called upon to make their debuts. While Moustakas has struggled so far, Hosmer and Duffy have certainly held their own with the big league team.
Kansas City fans have been waiting patiently as they continually were told that the future was coming, well the future is here and the future is now.
My gumption tells me that either Getz will be demoted, or reliever Everett Teaford is demoted to Omaha for the second time this season. We will continue to track this exciting news.
