Kansas City Royals finalize 40-man roster

The Royals have made moves to finalize their 40-man roster, including recently re-signed Jeremy Guthrie.

Recently re-signed starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie was added to the Kansas City Royals' roster on Tuesday, as the team made moves to finalize its 40-man roster for next season, according to the team's official website. Six other pitchers were also added and seven players were released, including pitcher Chris Volstad, who was only recently added on waivers from the Chicago Cubs.

Also added to the roster from Triple-A Omaha were pitchers Mike Montgomery, John Lamb, Chris Dwyer, Donnie Joseph, Justin Marks and J.C. Gutierrez. Volstad was was designated for assignment along with pitchers Vin Mazzaro and Ryan Verdugo, catcher Brayan Pena and Adam Moore, first baseman Clint Robinson and outfielder Derrick Robinson. These players have to 10 days to be traded, released or sent to the minors.

Pena has played four seasons with the Royals, batting .251 in 264 games. The Royals have high hopes for Montgomery and Lamb, who are both rated among the team's top 10 prospects by MLB.com.

The Winter Meetings take place Dec. 6 in Nashville, Tenn.
