Lorenzo Cain named Royals best defensive player

Despite missing over 100 games in an injury-riddled season, the center fielder was named the best defensive player for the Royals.

Center fielder Lorenzo Cain won the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award for the Royals on Sunday night as an awards show on MLB Network recognized the top defensive player for each major league club.

Cain, 26, missed more than 100 games for the Royals during the 2012 season after suffering from a variety of injuries that included a groin strain, a torn hip flexor and a strained right hamstring. Each of the injuries, though, were suffered in the outfield, including his groin injury that happened as he slammed into the wall in center field while making a catch on a long fly ball early in the season.

Wilson also named the MLB's top defensive team and top defensive players for each league on Sunday night, but the Royals were not recipients of either award.

Cain was originally acquired by the Royals as part of a trade that sent Zack Greinke to the Milwaukee Brewers.
