According to Bob Dutton, The Kansas City Star's Royals beat writer, the Royals have agreed to one-year deals with shortstop Alcides Escobar and second baseman Johnny Giavotella. Escobar was signed for $519,500 and Giavotella signed for $483,600.

Escobar is coming off a year in which played in 158 games, had a batting average of .254, had 129 hits and scored 69 runs. Giavotella played in 46 games last season, had a batting average of .247, had 44 hits and scored 20 runs.
