The Kansas City Royals are supposed to be young and fresh, but their string of injuries would make you believe they were an aging franchise. Salvador Perez is missing half the season, and Joakim Soria will miss all of 2012. Now Lorenzo Cain is the latest regular to hit the DL, this time with a left groin injury that came from making a spectacular catch at the wall versus the A’s this weekend.
Cain will be on the 15-day DL retroactive to Wednesday and Jarrod Dyson will be his replacement on the roster after being called up from AAA Omaha.
“Part of the problem is that this kid really uses his legs,” manager Ned Yost said. “He’s a speed guy, he covers a lot of ground and we want to nip this thing in the bud right now, so we don’t push him seven days from now when he’s not 100 percent and he re-aggravates it and it continues to affect him. So the smart thing to do is put him on the DL and let him get 100 percent [healthy] in the next two weeks.”
Dyson, Mitch Maier and Jason Bourgeois are all candidates to replace Cain in centerfield.
