Kansas City Royals Recall Johnny Giavotella, Place Jonathan Sanchez On DL

The Kansas City Royals placed starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday, and in a corresponding roster move, recalled Johnny Giavotella from AAA Omaha prior to Wednesday night's contest against the Boston Red Sox.

Sanchez heads to the disabled list with what's being listed as left biceps tendinitis. Sanchez, acquired over the winter from the San Francisco Giants, has not been effective with the Royals so far. In six starts, Sanchez has totaled just 25.2 innings, and has given up 19 runs on 25 hits while walking 22 batters and striking out only 18.

For Giavotella, it will be his second taste of the majors, as he was recalled last August and appeared in 46 games with the Royals. So far on the season in AAA, Giavotella hit .331/.408/.504 with five home runs in 133 at bats. Giavotella has especially been on a tear in his last ten games, hitting .395/.500/.632 in that span.
