Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Luke Hochevar put the Royals in a 3-0 hole after only two innings of play, and the deficit was too much too overcome. Hochevar calmed down after the third inning and he did not give up any more runs from the fourth through six innings.
For the Pirates, Erik Bedard pitched seven solid innings to pick up his fourth win of the year. Bedard held the Royals offense to only five hits and two runs, and then Jason Grilli worked a perfect eighth while Joel Hanrahan retired the side in order in the ninth for his 16th save in 18 opportunities.
The Royals did make it a 3-2 game when Yuniesky Betancourt and Mike Moustakas each hit a RBI single in the third inning, but that is the closest they would get to the Pirates.
