The reigning American League was banged around in his first All-Star Game start.
Justin Verlander gave up five runs in the top of the first to dig an early hole for the AL. The first run was scored on a double from reigning National League MVP Ryan Braun with one out. After Joey Votto struck out, Verlander walked Carlos Beltran and Buster Posey to load the bases.
Pablo Sandoval cleared them with a triple to right field extend the lead to 4-0, and Dan Uggla drove him home with an infield single, as Prince Fielder couldn't handle Derek Jeter's throw in the dirt at first base.
Verlander matches record for most earned runs allowed by All-Star starter (five). Glavine '92 NL, Palmer '77 AL.

Verlander had several pitches faster than 100 mph, but perhaps was too amped up and was wild. Verlander is known for his triple-digit pitches, but they usually come later in the game. Given the All-Star Game format, it was up to Verlander to balance his normal pace with a short start, but he couldn't do it.
