With the trade season coming to a close for another year, I thought it'd be fun to take a look back at the most recent move Kansas City has made with each major league team. While the Royals have been heavily involved with making a trade with most major league squads over the past five years, it is interesting to think that the Royals and Minnesota Twins have not hooked up in a trade in 34 years!
Enjoy everyone. I've added some brief (and sometimes snarky) commentary about each deal:
July 20, 2012: Royals trade SP Jonathan Sanchez to the Colorado Rockies for SP Jeremy Guthrie.
I think I just threw up as I typed Sanchez' name.
June 21, 2012: Royals trade SP Sean O`Sullivan to the Toronto Blue Jays for cash.
Not saying he is any good, but of course O'Sullivan is excelling at AAA Las Vegas for Toronto.
April 20, 2012: Royals trade SP Zach Miner to the Detroit Tigers for cash.
Somehow Miner is still just 30 years old. Was a mediocre pitcher with Detroit from 2006-09.
March 25, 2012: Royals trade OF Greg Golson to the Chicago White Sox for cash.
Meh.
March 20, 2012: Royals trade RP Kevin Chapman and OF D'Andre Toney to the Houston Astros for C Humberto Quintero and OF Jason Bourgeois.
Can we have a mulligan?
December 7, 2011: Royals trade 3B Yamaico Navarro to the Pittsburgh Pirates for SP Brooks Pounders and utility player Diego Goris.
BROOKS EFFIN POUNDERS!
November 7, 2011: Royals trade OF Melky Cabrea to the San Francisco Giants for SP Jonathan Sanchez and SP Ryan Verdugo.
Face meet wall.
September 27, 2011: Royals trade 1B Kila Ka`aihue to the Oakland Athletics for SP Ethan Hollingsworth.
Royals traded Ka`aihue when I finally started spelling his name correctly without having to look it up.
August 31, 2011: Royals trade C Matt Treanor to the Texas Rangers for cash.
We miss you Misty May-Treanor!
July 30, 2011: Royals trade 2B Mike Aviles to the Boston Red Sox for P Kendal Volz and 3B Yamaico Navarro.
Not even a year later, and neither Volz or Navarro are still in the organization.
June 1, 2011: Royals trade C Lucas May to the Arizona Diamondbacks for P Andrea Pizziconi.
Royals took a flyer on the Italian Pizziconi who had a 6.81 ERA for Burlington in '11 and was nowhere to be seen in 2012.
May 8, 2011: Royals trade OF Gregor Blanco the Washington Nationals for a player to be named
To my knowledge, that player was never named.
April 13, 2011: Royals trade RP Victor Marte to the St Louis Cardinals for cash.
I really have nothing to write about this trade.
March 22, 2011: Royals trade OF Brett Carroll to the Milwaukee Brewers for cash.
Straight cash, homey.
September 13, 2010: Royals trade utility player Willie Bloomquist to the Cincinnati Reds for cash.
He's 34 and would still be an upgrade over Yuniesky Betancounrt.
July 31, 2010: Royals trade OF Rick Ankiel and RP Kyle Farnsworth to the Atlanta Braves for Gregor Blanco, Jesse Chavez, and Tim Collins.
It's painful to see Blanco succeed in San Francisco, but Royals won the deal with Collins.
July 28, 2010: Royals trade OF Scott Podsednik to the Los Angeles Dodgers for SP Elisaul Pimentel and C Lucas May.
Kansas City fans might miss Podsednik's wife (Lisa Dergan Podsednik) more than him.
July 22, 2010: Royals trade 3B Alberto Callaspo to the Los Angeles Angels for SP Sean O`Sullivan and SP Will Smith.
Gettin' jiggy 'wit it.
July 10, 2009: Royals trade RP Derrick Saito and SP Dan Cortes to the Seattle Mariners for 2B Yuniesky Betancourt.
It pains me to admit the Royals actually won this trade.
July 2, 2009: Royals purchase OF Ryan Freel from the Chicago Cubs.
FARNEYYYYYYYYYY.
April 1, 2009: Royals trade 1B Ross Gload and cash to the Florida Miami Marlins for RP Eric Basurto.
Gload is somehow still around in the big leagues, while Basurto briefly was on AA Northwest Arkansas' roster in '11.
March 26, 2008: Royals trade 1B Justin Huber to the San Diego Padres for cash.
Huber was the guy Kansas City traded Jose Bautista for. Ugh.
December 6, 2006: Royals trade RP Ambiorix Burgos to the New York Mets for SP Brian Bannister.
Burgos was charged with kidnapping and attempted murder in 2010. Wait, what?
June 20, 2006: Royals trade RP J.P. Howell to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for 2B Fernando Cortez and OF Joey Gathright.
Dayton Moore's first transaction, and it was a bad one.
June 8, 2005: Royals trade OF/1B Eli Marrero to the Baltimore Orioles for utility player Pete Maestrales.
Maestrales never made it past A+ ball for the Royals, but Marrero was on the tail end of his career as well.
August 25, 2003: Royals trade SP Kieran Mattison, OF Trey Dyson, and cash to the Cleveland Indians for SP Brian Anderson and RP Chris White.
Anderson was actually 5-1 down the stretch as the Royals made a run at the playoffs in 2003.
June 5, 2001: Royals trade RP Jose Santiago to the Philadelphia Phillies for SP Paul Byrd.
Kansas City fans will always remember The Byrd's Nest.
August 11, 2000: Royals trade SS Nick Ortiz to the New York Yankees for 2B/SS Wilson Delgado.
Ortiz languished in the minors for a few more seasons while Delgado played in the Major Leagues for four more years after KC.
April 4, 1978: Royals purchase 1B Randy Bass from the Minnesota Twins for cash.
Bass had 2 career at-bats for the Royals, and I wasn't even born yet.
