The Royals pounded Detroit ace Justin Verlander for a whopping eight runs on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium, as Kansas City narrowly held on late for a 9-8 victory in a wildly entertaining game.
Royals starter Luis Mendoza served up three runs to the Tigers in the first inning and appeared out of sorts, but was quickly staked to a 7-3 advantage after a series of base hits off of Verlander. Along with a 3-for-4 performance from Billy Butler and a 3-for-5 night from third baseman Mike Moustakas to power the offense, the Royals also picked up a pair of doubles from red-hot outfielder Alex Gordon.
Gordon, who is now hitting .297 on the season after starting off the first two months with a .237 mark, has now recorded multi-hit performances in each of his last five games. Looking to keep things going in the series, the Royals will send right-hander Bruce Chen to the mound on Wednesday to face Detroit's Anibal Sanchez.
