The Kansas City Royals have designated infielder Yuniesky Betancourt for assignment according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star. Kansas City will now have 10 days to either trade or release Bethancourt.

Betancourt was hitting .232 with seven home runs in 56 games for the Royals this season. His defense was below average and he certainly wasn't living up to the one-year $2 million contract that he signed during the offseason.

The Royals will call up Tony Abreu from Omaha who was hitting .322 with nine homers and 73 RBIs. Abreu was primarily playing second base at Omaha and should get a look down the stretch.
