The Kansas City Royals held off a late surge to overcome the Cleveland Indians in the first of a three game series, winning 6-3. The Indians pulled to within a run in the 7th inning as Indians catcher Carlos Santana drove in Asdrubal Cabrera and Shin-Soo Choo, bringing the score to 4-3. The Royals responded in the 8th with two runs of their own, sealing the victory.
Kansas City catcher Brayan Pena drove in right fielder Jeff Francoeur in the 2nd inning, giving Kansas City a lead they would not surrender. Pena drove in Francoeur again in the 8th to give Kansas City extra cushion, and securing the 6-3 victory.
Luis Mendoza picked up the win for the Royals, bringing him to 8-9 on the year. Greg Holland earned the save.
